If you don't want to use a laminator due to cost, you could always get a cheap roll of sticky contact - you know that clear sticky plastic stuff that you used to cover school books?
Hope that helps! |

good idea, Jed. I just wondered if you had a laminator as places like Woolworths had them last year for xmas. I'd happily do it for you if had the time to send them to me and for me to post them back to you.

I'm thinking of using clear pockets by just cutting them up and sticking over pictures. A lady at my nursery said get a few Argos catalogs and cut out some pics from them so I'm doing that. I can always make a cheap prototype to check my idea will be durable and safe. Got most of my homework done this week, just need to print it today after I get back from my job interview (feeling really nervous as I'm terrible at answering interview questions.) Gotta go now, I'll try to update later.

I just lost everything I typed
Had interview for part-time office job and it went well. Will hear something by Tues and would start the following Mon. They said I could work full-time on Mon and Weds so it fits around my course and placement. They asked if I would quit their job when I finish the NVQ but I said I wouldn't unless I didn't like the job then. Obviously I can't stay in one job forever unless it's really worth it. As long as they couldn't sue me if I leave for a better job. More ideas for my game. Flaps with pictures behind such as they have in Spot the Dog books. Possibly pop-ups behind the flaps but I need to check if 3-5 years old like those. And they'd need to be strong. Got pastel coloured card today because one of the things they will learn from the game is colours, besides numbers. Also matching things. I don't have a completely clear idea yet. I think that's the jist of my post that I lost. May post more tomorrow after I've had my third session with the babies |

Of you say you wouldn't leave the job Lu, that's just the standard part of the interview. And the ideas for the game are sounding really good.
Let me know if I can help in any way. |

Update: I have to visit part of the jobcentre for the next six Thursday mornings for them to do a jobsmatch (I'm assuming they will be short visits). I am worried that they'll help me get a full-time job so I have to quit my NVQ course. I was really not happy when they told me I have to do that because it's 20 minutes walk there and coming home it's up quite a steep hill. Also I feel so depressed when I'm in or near the jobcentre. There may be a chance that I can sign off and get away from doing it but it depends if I get the part-time job I went for yesterday. I am worried that they'll either having trouble reaching either of my two referees (since I haven't spoken to either for several months and either may have moved since) or they'll be too worried that I'll leave once I've finished my course.
I don't suppose they could offer me the job on the condition I quit my course, could they? I don't want to leave my course for any reason because I would still have to pay for it, I've already worked hard on it and I really want to go into Childcare one day. |

I didn't get the part-time office job.
Not looking forwarding to visiting Jobmatch at the jobcentre tomorrow. I have the clear idea that they only want to get me into a full-time job and &^%$ the part-time course I'm doing which I've already done plenty of work on. I haven't told jobcentre about my placement because I got the idea before that they could take money from my benefits for doing it. 37.50 a week is low enough as it is (cos my savings are over 3k by quite a bit). I could afford to sign off and live carefully on my savings but I don't know what the taxman would say when he sends an annoying form to ask about my (non-) earnings for the year. I'll see how it goes tomorrow. Will be starting to make my game soon. I have a clearer idea now. I will make a bit a day so I can be slow and careful. Going to babysit for my best friend this afternoon. I haven't seen them for a few weeks so it's the perfect chance for me to visit That's all for now, back to catching up with the boards. |

I have no idea if they can make you quit a course that has a good chance of getting you a qualification to help you get a better job! That would just seem so ludicrous!
I hope you get it sorted. |

The jobcentre don't care if the course could help me get a job (better or not is in the eye of the beholder). They aren't happy that the course takes place in a bit of the time I said I'd be available for work (I had no choice of course hours). In reality they want to get people signing off ASAP and maybe by driving them mad they achieve this!
They didn't find me any vacancies on jobmatch today |

YES! at least they didn't force you off the course.
Keep going Lu, you know you can do it! |

If push comes to shove (as they say) I would sign off and not get jobseeker's allowance just so I can stay on my course (I have some savings which is why my JSA is a crap amount).
One of my new friends is quitting her weekly job because they treat her like crap, and she won't be able to claim JSA because she has quit rather than being sacked/made redundant. She's going to manage on savings until she finds a better part-time job which will fit around the course. My niece says once I have a nursery job, I should start on level 3 as in the future nurseries will only employ people qualified to level 3. She has a similar qualification as the one I'm doing but it's level 3 because she had high enough exam grades to do it. My niece is 19 and I'm 28 because I'm the baby daughter with 3 older brothers. She just lent me her qualification's handbook so I can look at that for some ideas besides my one. I'm about half-way through the homework I got yesterday, few more days then I can concentrate on making my 3-5 yrs game. Half-term is very good for me because I have 9 extra hours for homework (if I need that long). |

That's good, and I'm glad you're planning it all so carefully. Its kinda cool that your neice is able to give you a few tips too!

Thanks for your support, Ro, it's great when people are encouraging.
Nearly got my homework printed for last Fri so just my game to finish. I have an idea for 1 part of the game: Shapes and recognising them. I will make some flat cardboard shapes and stick them on card, then cut out some pictures of things which have those shapes in them which should help children learn to recognise the shapes. E.g. for a circle, I could have a round cup. I still have a few observational bits of homework to do but I can't do them until at least next week and 1 I am waiting on parents' permission for. Might be going shopping in Bromley with Mum this week, look for a few new clothes. Might start buying some xmas pressies. It is worth the trainfare to get there cos they have great clothes shops like BHS. I haven't been on a proper shopping trip for ages. |

I think you deserve to go on a shopping trip! you've been working hard, and been thru' a lot recently with the work situation.
You know, i think that the study and the homework and having to do things like the game are going to help your creative muse come back too. |

Possibly (about the creative muse), Ro. I am slowly reading fanfics again so it's only a matter of time before i get back into writing again. It will have to be once I'm less busier though, I need to read my course handbook still as it is.

LOL - don't we all!
Well, you're doing well keeping the blog updated too. I bet you'll find as you get busier, the muse arrives and then you'll have not enough time to pay attention to what it wants you to write! |

Sorry I havent updated for a while. Been busy with various things.
One piece of homework I have this week is to plan a 2-course meal for a 5 year old who's a vegetarian. I have a few ideas and going to ask for some ideas at nursery. Some of the homework I get is quite boring but also quite easy as it just requires me to write and I've had a lot of practice at writing. I'll just share the more-interesting homework with you. Course is going well but at the moment I can't find a part-time job with suitable hours. I really don't want to work earlier than 8am or work much into the evening because it gets dark early and I don't feel safe travelling on my own when it's dark (even if there's some streetlights) The PT job would have to be very local if it finished in evenings. So at the moment I'm getting Jobseeker's allowance and trying to do what the jobcentre say without having to quit my course. I'm sure they should have a different benefit for people doing Part-time studying. |

I can't believe that there isn't a special allowence for people to study and to look for part-time work Lu. That's shocking. Mind you, I'll proabably be looking for a job soon, so I'll find out.
glad the course is going well. Do you need any help for the two course meal for a veggie kid? Being veggie, I've got lots of menus at home. Let me know. |
